Phileen Dickinson

BIO

Phileen Dickinson is a self-taught artist who finds her grounding in sound composition, employing movement and form and line. Her work is unabashedly representational, yet seeks to elevate the subject matter through the play of light, translucence and transparency, enlivening her work with joyous use of colour. She also continues to explore and enjoy life-drawing, printmaking, teaching and exploring other means of artistic expression.

Artist Statement

The White show is a great idea and a wonderful challenge to explore for an artist for whom colour and form are my ‘safe’ areas where I like to play. Initially I was daunted by the idea of the restriction of a monochromatic approach to creating these pieces but I ended up having a lot of fun with the idea of creating a dynamic image with very little colour.

I have a collection of old life drawings which I have been wanting to work with: celebrating the power of the power of how simple lines can capture expressions of the human form. I decided that starting off with a few of these images would anchor the composition, adding context and movement. Once that decision was made I ended up having a blast playing with assorted Tri-Art acrylic products: exploring and incorporating translucence, transparency, gloss and flat textures…as well as introducing other textural elements with drywall tape.
