Red Cow

Red Cow, acrylic on canvas 30” x 30” $1200

When I first started painting about 10 years ago, I had a stack of photographs that I had taken of farm animals around Kingston or while travelling in the U.S. and Canada, mostly of cows because I have always been drawn to the gentle, calm air of placidity about them. My first paintings, all done in Kingston, were of cows painted from the photographs and include Brown Cow, Red Cow and White Cow. In the three works, the cows have been removed from the pastoral context in which they were photographed, ‘exiled’ so to speak into the aesthetic space of a monochromatic background, and thus freed from the connotations of domestication that define them.
